La Gomera received its DO status in 2003. The island is dramatic -- deep ravines (barrancos), laurisilva cloud forest, and terraced vineyards on near-vertical slopes. Production is very small and rarely leaves the island.
The volcanic terraces and high humidity from the laurisilva create wines with a distinctive freshness. Whites are the main output. The local Forastera Blanca grape is almost unique to La Gomera.
